One Week Out, No Spin: Where the Governor’s Race, LA Mayor, Prop 39 and Prop 40 Stand

ne week before the election, here is where California actually stands on the governor's race, the LA mayor's race, Prop 39 (voter ID) and Prop 40 (the one-time billionaire tax), with the numbers, the filings, and the fine print each side leaves out.

The governor's race isn't close: Becerra leads every public poll since August by 18 to 27 points. The more useful question is how much ground Hilton gains for the next Republican nominee. Prop 40 can win a majority and still be cancelled, because Props 41 and 42 are written to override it if either gets more yes votes. Prop 39 is called voter ID, but about 13 million of the 16 million Californians who voted in 2024 voted by mail. And in Los Angeles, one voter in three hasn't picked a mayor.

We don't tell you how to vote. We tell you what the documents say, what each side wants you to believe, and what we don't know yet.
