California Democrats are quietly building themselves a $1 billion palatial annex to the Capitol building—and they still won’t tell taxpayers how much it’s really costing. The last public cost estimate came out three years ago at $1.1 billion, making it one of the most expensive government buildings in the U.S. Since then, lawmakers have refused to release updated numbers while construction continues right in front of everyone’s eyes.

Meanwhile, they spent $5.2 million shipping California granite all the way to Italy for fabrication, and even added secret tunnels to avoid the press and public. All this while Governor Gavin Newsom tries to deflect attention by mocking Trump for a privately funded ballroom project at the White House.

So who’s really acting like the aristocracy here? Sacramento’s political class or D.C.?
