$3.5 Billion in Hospice Fraud, 2,300 Teachers Fired, and Trump Forces California's Coast Open

This week on California Underground, we're covering three stories that cut straight to the heart of how California is being managed — and mismanaged.

First, the hospice fraud scandal hiding in plain sight in Los Angeles. CBS News just dropped a bombshell investigation revealing 742 hospice companies still operating with active fraud indicators — including 89 registered to a single building. The state auditor flagged this four years ago. So why are people in the final months of their lives still being scammed out of real medical care?

Then, Trump invoked a Cold War-era emergency law to force Sable Offshore's Santa Barbara pipeline back online — overriding California's courts, fire marshal, and regulatory agencies. The pipeline already spilled 450,000 gallons in 2015. Is this a legitimate national security move or a dangerous precedent that every state should be paying attention to?

And finally — over 2,300 California school employees just received pink slips, including teachers, nurses, and librarians. LAUSD is staring down an $877 million deficit while sitting on $5 billion in reserves. Governor Newsom just proposed cutting $8.8 billion from statewide education. None of this was a surprise. So who's accountable?
