Episode 24 - 1984 in Our Country, Double Standards, OC Beach Closure, Gavin Refuses to Manage State Budget Conservatively

As we head into week....6 of stay at home order? More people are beginning to wake up and feel they are being severely oppressed and robbed of their rights. Protests breaking out all over the state.

Gavin may have poked a hornets nest by singling out the OC and reawakening its strong Republican foothold.

In an interview with Seth Myers, Gavin talks about how our $24 billion surplus is gone and the federal government needs to bail him out so he can get all his progressive policies on his wish list.

If you're a California Conservative, a libertarian, a

00:00:09
moderate Democrat, believe in common sense, or just the same

00:00:12
person, this is the political podcast for you.

00:00:15
It's the California Underground podcast.

00:00:21
What's going on? Everybody think of the tune in

00:00:23
to another episode of the California Underground spill.

00:00:27
Happy Mayday at the time of this recording, dozens well, probably

00:00:33
a handful of protest going on right now all over the state and

00:00:37
through Sacramento, San Francisco, Huntington Beach, San

00:00:40
Diego. Not sure if there's one going on

00:00:43
in LA, but there were a whole bunch of which I mentioned last

00:00:45
week. If you've been following on

00:00:47
Instagram, handles fully open CA.

00:00:50
Right now they have protests going on all over the place.

00:00:53
I think there might be more protests going on tomorrow.

00:00:57
If you want to find out what they're doing, you want to check

00:00:59
in, support them to whatever protests have been happening.

00:01:02
Protests happened last weekend as well, which I will talk about

00:01:05
a little bit on the show because I was down there at the one here

00:01:08
in San Diego, Pacific Beach. So with that, there's a lot to

00:01:13
always get to, especially with the coronavirus the Rona

00:01:17
happening right now. And as people were starting to

00:01:20
head out of it and you started to see a May 1st.

00:01:23
A lot of states. I think it was 38 states have as

00:01:26
of now are reopening so that means there's a lot of states

00:01:29
that are already moving towards reopening.

00:01:31
Getting back to normal, reopening their economy, helping

00:01:34
small businesses and small business owners get back into

00:01:38
some sort of normalcy. Texas led the way I would say

00:01:42
Texas is leading the way Georgia was the first one to really

00:01:44
reopen, but mostly it looks like a majority of the states are

00:01:48
starting to reopen California. Still very reluctant.

00:01:51
We're going to get into that, but let's start with.

00:01:54
Out of the gate monologue. You always see people joke about

00:01:58
how 1984 is here and we've now crossed into an Orwellian world

00:02:02
without knowing it. This of course was prepandemic,

00:02:06
but now the laughter is turning into smoldering anger over

00:02:09
what's going on in our country. If you're not too familiar with

00:02:13
1984 outside of the fact that it is a book about a dystopian

00:02:15
future, here's a quick summary. There's an individual by the

00:02:19
name of Winston Smith, who lives and works in this dystopian

00:02:21
future country of Oceana, where Big Brother that's where the

00:02:25
term comes from and the party basically control every aspect

00:02:29
of your life. The party strongly forbids any

00:02:32
sort of free thought, or as they like to call it, quote a thought

00:02:35
crime. In Oceana, you were given a

00:02:38
specific job, and you're constantly monitored for any

00:02:41
disobedience. The hero of the story begins to

00:02:43
question things because he specifically remembers things

00:02:46
differently than the Ministry of Truth puts them out.

00:02:50
Since it works at the ministry and is responsible for

00:02:52
correcting old story, he sees it first hand.

00:02:55
However, he fears being vaporized for starting to

00:02:58
question the narrative around him.

00:03:00
Individuals around him stare blindly into a TV screen where

00:03:03
Big Brother feeds them. The daily lies the state wants

00:03:06
you to regurgitate. Probably seen it in the famous

00:03:09
Apple 1984 commercial as a hero looks around, he sees everyone

00:03:13
succumbing to the lies and the disinformation frothing

00:03:16
themselves into a fervor. Now I won't go too far into

00:03:20
detail. The rest of the story because I

00:03:22
don't want to spoil it for you, and also it's a good story.

00:03:26
But we see here a similarities between that story and now.

00:03:30
I try to refrain from such alarmist notions that are we are

00:03:33
surrendering to an Orwellian world, but sometimes the

00:03:36
comparisons are too much to ignore.

00:03:40
Last week, I discussed how the stats being put out are not

00:03:43
commensurate with the extreme measures that are being put into

00:03:45
place to prevent the spread. I truly believe we are starting

00:03:50
to see people waking up to the reality that this has become

00:03:52
overblown, and we may have done more harm than good.

00:03:56
Such thoughts are not allowed in our current climate.

00:03:58
Two doctors from here in California gained national

00:04:01
recognition when they openly refuted the notion that we need

00:04:04
to remain shut down, and we only need it to quarantine the

00:04:07
elderly and most vulnerable. The news spread like wildfire

00:04:11
and news channels quickly picked it up, but as soon as they

00:04:13
explode onto the scene, any video then was taken down as

00:04:16
disinformation or violating community guidelines by the big

00:04:20
tech companies. It was memory hold, or at least

00:04:23
they tried to memory hold it. The mainstream media and the

00:04:26
tech companies aren't the only ones making sure you abide by

00:04:29
party rules. Similar to the manic viewers of

00:04:33
Big Brother in 1984, the media has essentially wiped the

00:04:36
populace into a fear induced panic over the coronavirus.

00:04:40
Fear is a powerful motivator and you see it everywhere on the

00:04:44
news and social media. People parroting the same

00:04:47
talking points over and over again.

00:04:50
You've heard them before. We must stay home to flatten the

00:04:53
curve. We can't even think about

00:04:55
opening the economy until everyone can be tested.

00:04:58
I know it hurts, but we're all in this together.

00:05:02
And my personal favorite, if we reopen too early, we will end up

00:05:05
killing millions of people. The same point echoed again and

00:05:11
again want to question what's going on with the facts and

00:05:14
statistics. That's a thought crime and you

00:05:16
should be ashamed for thinking such things.

00:05:18
In fact, if you get particularly cheeky response, it might

00:05:21
include a nice little doctored waiver saying you waive all

00:05:24
right to medical care for having such incorrect thoughts.

00:05:28
Now finally, our Hero 1984 is constantly looking over his

00:05:31
shoulder for fear that someone might snitch on him and get him

00:05:34
vaporized for thought crimes. Today, there is no need to worry

00:05:38
about. How tyrannical governments can

00:05:40
impose and enforce such strict measures.

00:05:41
When you have a brainwashed populace ready to tattle on

00:05:44
every person who is not strictly abiding by arbitrary guidelines,

00:05:48
don't think that's true. Just look at what Mayor Garcetti

00:05:51
said in a press conference. He said, you know what they say

00:05:55
about snitches? Well, in this case snitches get

00:05:59
rewards. No need for there to be a police

00:06:02
everywhere when you have scared the populace into doing the

00:06:05
policing for you. Of course we are far from the

00:06:08
dark and bleak world of 1904, but its story is no less

00:06:12
pertinent today than ever. George Orwell said that 1984 was

00:06:16
to be a cautionary tale, not an instruction manual.

00:06:19
However, the heroes of today don't have to worry about being

00:06:22
vaporized. There are heroes who stand out

00:06:24
on street corners, waving signs to open up the country.

00:06:26
Again, heroes, such as doctors who go against the grain and

00:06:30
tell you there is not a rational reason for being completely shut

00:06:33
down. There are Winston Smiths all

00:06:35
over this country willing to push back on the party's

00:06:38
tyranny. Thought crimes aren't completely

00:06:41
illegal yet, so again, I urge those out there who have

00:06:46
questions and concerns to speak up.

00:06:48
It is only when our voices are made loud enough and joined

00:06:51
together will people begin to question what's going on for the

00:06:54
sake of our country and to ensure 1984 remains a work of

00:06:57
fiction and engage in thought crimes.

00:07:01
Commit them on social media, commit them in discussions with

00:07:04
friends and family. Commit them wherever there is an

00:07:07
opportunity to do so. Otherwise it really will be a

00:07:11
crime to think differently. So obviously there's a lot going

00:07:17
on out there in California, California.

00:07:21
We're going to get into a little bit about him closing the

00:07:23
beaches and then reversing his policy, and also some

00:07:26
interesting tidbits that I pulled from Seth Meyers.

00:07:28
I didn't even know he was on Seth Meyers last night, but I

00:07:31
was able to find the footage. Not that it's hard to find.

00:07:35
You can go on YouTube and find it because they're pushing up

00:07:38
all these late night hosts, but I found it just by happenstance

00:07:42
because I was looking for any latest daily briefings.

00:07:45
From Gavin Newsom for the show. And then I saw that he was on

00:07:48
Seth Meyers, so I pulled a couple clips up there.

00:07:51
So one thing that I wanted to talk about really quickly, and

00:07:55
it's more the national news going on with this whole Joe

00:07:57
Biden thing. And the double standard that's

00:08:00
happening and how it really does tie in to what's going on here

00:08:04
locally. This is Martin.

00:08:06
Joe Biden went on Morning Joe with Mika Brzezinski, who was

00:08:09
supposed to be giving him these hardball questions if you heard

00:08:12
it. She had obviously pain in her

00:08:14
voice as if every single question that she answered asked

00:08:19
hurt her in a physical and emotional way.

00:08:23
There's clips out there of McPherson Ski and Joe

00:08:26
Scarborough talking about how much they love Joe Biden, how

00:08:29
Mika Brzezinski said that she knows that he's a flirtatious

00:08:33
man, that it is. He does this what should call

00:08:37
safe flirtation, meaning that there could be a kiss there

00:08:40
could be holding hands. There could be a hug, there

00:08:42
could be something like that, but it's all safe and harmless

00:08:45
because that's who Joe Biden is, and she would be sad to know if

00:08:49
Joe Biden has to change because of everything that's happened.

00:08:53
But as you've probably already seen that the double standards

00:08:56
going on between Democrats and Republicans, comparing this to

00:09:00
what happened with Brett Kavanaugh is night and day.

00:09:04
And it's not hard to go back and see.

00:09:07
It's not hard to go back and see what Nancy Pelosi said about him

00:09:11
now or Brett Kavanaugh then and Joe Biden now and how she has

00:09:15
changed her tune completely from.

00:09:17
Well, we must believe all women are guilty until proven

00:09:20
innocent. Therefore he has to come out and

00:09:22
prove that he didn't do this to now, which is well.

00:09:25
Joe Biden is a great man. He's been a leader in the Senate

00:09:29
and there's no way we must believe and allow him the chance

00:09:34
to defend himself and prove that he's innocent.

00:09:38
Of course, that same standard wasn't obviously given to Brett

00:09:41
Kavanaugh during the Supreme Court hearings, and you have a

00:09:45
accuser who has a lot more facts on our side.

00:09:47
She has more people who are corroborating than doctor

00:09:50
Christine Blasey Ford and all, and it's hard for them to now

00:09:56
backpedal and say that no, wait a second, the Me too movement,

00:10:00
which was believe all women 100% guilty until proven innocent and

00:10:05
that the burden of proof is really on the accused man.

00:10:09
That there is now all of a sudden this different standard.

00:10:12
Because it's Joe Biden and you even see articles.

00:10:14
You see articles saying that he must be held accountable, but

00:10:17
that doesn't mean he's not electable.

00:10:19
So before it was well, we can't appoint a man for life to the

00:10:23
Supreme Court, because obviously this man is going to be on the

00:10:27
Supreme Court forever and affect millions of lives because he's

00:10:30
this sexual predator. And this monster who's out there

00:10:33
on the Supreme Court as opposed to let's say, the leader of the

00:10:35
free world who has enormous influence over.

00:10:39
Millions if not billions of lives because of the fact that

00:10:44
he's the leader of America and we have influence all over the

00:10:47
world. But that doesn't really matter

00:10:49
to the left. Now the left is really kind of

00:10:50
backtracked. So what I'm trying to do is, I'm

00:10:53
trying to tie this into here locally in California.

00:10:56
It's not just the Joe Biden issue.

00:10:58
The double standards exist on both sides.

00:11:01
If you don't, you're not aware of the fact of Gavin Newsome's

00:11:05
incredulous history of what happened with him and Kimberly

00:11:08
Gilfoy. He did cheat on her and he

00:11:11
cheated on her with one of his best friend's wives and it was

00:11:15
called out to our attention mostly through Travis Allen

00:11:20
during the gubernatorial debate back a couple of years ago.

00:11:24
Here's a clip of it we can't trust Gavin with his best

00:11:27
friend's wife. How can you trust him with your

00:11:29
state? Yeah, I mean it's it's hard with

00:11:31
respect to to hear from Mr. Allen who's a devout supporter

00:11:35
of Donald Trump, talk about the issue of sexual harassment.

00:11:41
A devout supporter. I mean it was number.

00:11:45
Surprise that Travis Allen positioned himself as the maggot

00:11:49
candidate, the Trump candidate for the gubernatorial race, as

00:11:52
opposed to feckless John Cox, who really didn't do anything.

00:11:56
As soon as he made the list, or as soon as he made the ticket,

00:11:59
he seemed to roll over, but that's all different story, but

00:12:01
you notice how all of a sudden they keep pushing away and they

00:12:05
keep deflecting on this issue in the sense that it doesn't matter

00:12:08
if the Democrats did it. Donald Trump is an awful human

00:12:12
being and orange man bad, and obviously, he said.

00:12:16
That horrible thing on the Hollywood access tape with I

00:12:19
forget who his name is. I mean he's such a flash in the

00:12:22
pan at this point. I don't even really care who he

00:12:23
is. Who leaked that tape.

00:12:25
But as you can see, they always push back on it so they're only

00:12:28
response. And I mean, if that was your

00:12:31
only card to play, I guess I would play that too and push

00:12:34
back. But there is a difference here

00:12:36
in the sense that yeah, there have been people who have

00:12:37
accused Donald Trump or not so much as in this case where there

00:12:42
is somebody who. I mean there were some people

00:12:45
who tried to come out and. Accused Donald Trump and it

00:12:48
didn't really work and people looked at it.

00:12:49
Like, yeah, OK, we don't believe you.

00:12:51
And you're obviously a little crazy.

00:12:53
I think the last person who came out and tried to accuse Donald

00:12:56
Trump made such an embarrassment of herself on CNN and Anderson

00:13:00
Cooper. He literally had to cut away

00:13:02
because he started to believe this is literally unraveling as

00:13:06
we're airing this segment live with her.

00:13:08
So we're now going to have to cut away to a commercial and get

00:13:10
rid of her because it's just so bad.

00:13:13
But you can see that they always kind of push it back on.

00:13:16
Well, you know, even though I was incredulous and I cheated on

00:13:20
my wife, you have Donald Trump who runs around saying grab them

00:13:23
by the you know what? How dare you even make that

00:13:27
comparison to me, it doesn't change the fact that you're not

00:13:30
accountable. I'm not going to sit here and

00:13:31
say that whatever Donald Trump did if he did or did not do it

00:13:35
doesn't change the fact that it's still a bad standard to

00:13:38
set. You can't say well, because I

00:13:41
cheated on my wife. Therefore it's OK because Donald

00:13:45
Trump is a horrible person. No, those are still inherently

00:13:49
bad things, and using Donald Trump as a scapegoat is kind of

00:13:53
saying well, as long as the president does it, I'm OK.

00:13:56
And that's become the sort of the double standard as well.

00:14:00
A Republican can do it, and it's an awful horrible thing.

00:14:03
And we must believe all women we must.

00:14:07
Make sure that the man is accused is 100% guilty until

00:14:11
proven innocent, as opposed on the other side, where if you're

00:14:14
Democrat, whether it's a reason and maybe maybe it's something

00:14:17
that was bigger issue. Maybe?

00:14:19
I don't know, maybe, but there's all these different reasons we

00:14:22
have to give them the benefit of the doubt.

00:14:23
Let them figure this out. But you still can't just point

00:14:26
to Donald Trump and say, well, Donald Trump's a horrible,

00:14:29
disgusting misogynist human being.

00:14:31
Therefore it's all right. And he did, you know, Gavin

00:14:34
Newsom, if I've said anything, I've said that he's a very

00:14:38
clever and very clever and smart politician.

00:14:43
He knew when he said that he was able to get a reaction from the

00:14:46
crowd. He was able to move it around.

00:14:48
A lot of people picked up on it. There's some people who said

00:14:50
that whatever Travis Allen said was kill shot.

00:14:53
It was really good. Some people who saw the debate

00:14:56
also said that what? Gavin Newsom, how he deflected,

00:14:59
was the perfect way to deflect because it's orange, man bad

00:15:02
when it comes down to it. So what does it matter?

00:15:05
Donald Trump is, supposedly, this is the.

00:15:10
Poster for the American poster boy of sexual harassment in this

00:15:13
country. So even if you vote for Donald

00:15:16
Trump, there's no way you can point out what Democrats did

00:15:18
because, well, you voted for Donald Trump.

00:15:21
Which doesn't really make sense, and I guess it's one way to

00:15:24
deflect. And like I said, if it's your

00:15:26
only card right now and you really have nowhere to go and

00:15:29
the Democrats have put kind of painted themselves in this

00:15:32
corner. Where they have to go back and

00:15:37
say, well, all that me to believe all women.

00:15:40
Is now no longer. Oh well, there's some conditions

00:15:42
and there's it's a little different.

00:15:44
Now. When it's Joe Biden and they

00:15:46
know they're caught. They know they're caught in a

00:15:49
rock and a hard place, and they either cave on what they said

00:15:52
before. Or they stand up for it and they

00:15:58
go after Joe Biden. So I don't think this is over

00:16:01
and I don't think a softball interview like the one Joe.

00:16:05
How Mika Brzezinski, where she was so pained and agonizing over

00:16:10
every question she felt so. But Mr Vice President, sorry I'm

00:16:14
sorry I have to ask you this horrible questions, but you're

00:16:17
such a good friend and I have to do this because I'm a journalist

00:16:20
and if anyone believes me, comprehensi is a journalist.

00:16:23
Well I have a bridge to sell. But I want to move on back to

00:16:27
the local news. I just wanted to tie that in

00:16:29
because I just wanted to show sort of the double standard and

00:16:32
sort of the shell game that they've been playing with this

00:16:35
whole terror. Read me too.

00:16:36
Sexual harassment thing with Joe Biden.

00:16:39
Did go to the? Protest last week down in

00:16:45
Pacific Beach. I was there in an official

00:16:48
capacity to keep an eye on things as an attorney.

00:16:52
And I I will tell you this, I was all about 200 people.

00:16:56
It was well attended. Nobody got out of hand.

00:16:59
Nobody caused any violence. Nobody broke any store windows.

00:17:04
There were a ton of red maga hats.

00:17:06
There were a ton of flags or a ton of Trump flags.

00:17:10
And it was. It was well attended and it was

00:17:13
very calm and a lot of people I know in the community were very

00:17:17
upset about that because they thought.

00:17:18
Obviously, if you go out and protest, you're going to kill

00:17:21
grandma by going out and protesting.

00:17:25
But it seemed pretty calm and I don't have to give credit to the

00:17:28
San Diego Police Department. They did a good job of just

00:17:31
keeping an eye on everything and letting people exercise their

00:17:34
First Amendment rights. Just making sure they stayed off

00:17:37
the sidewalk. Stuff like that.

00:17:38
Don't block the roads. You can stay on the sidewalk.

00:17:41
And protests. At a certain point, you could

00:17:44
just see that people were going around in their cars.

00:17:47
They were sort of creating this caravan.

00:17:48
A little parade just going back and forth causing all this

00:17:51
ruckus and noise. So All in all, it was a very

00:17:55
well attended well taken well. Everyone's well behaved.

00:18:00
I guess you could say and it wasn't a Antifa protest.

00:18:05
Not where you see Antifa going in, and they just start breaking

00:18:08
stuff for no reason. They start throwing trash cans

00:18:10
through Starbucks, windows, or hitting people, or throwing off

00:18:13
smoke grenades. It was just people standing

00:18:15
around signs and American flags and shouting and doing what a

00:18:19
peaceful. I would say that was a peaceful

00:18:21
protest. Nothing went wrong, no legal

00:18:24
legal happened. No one was arrested.

00:18:26
It was all very up and up, and I'm sure I haven't seen really a

00:18:29
lot of the footage of what's going on today.

00:18:31
For tomorrow yet, but I'm sure a lot of people are doing the same

00:18:35
thing and the different cities right now that fully open

00:18:38
California is doing right now. I'm sure they're very well

00:18:41
respected. I'm sure they're following the

00:18:43
rules that they know what their rights are, and they're not

00:18:45
really. They're not really causing too

00:18:48
much of a problem right now, so just want to give you that

00:18:50
little update and just first hand.

00:18:53
If you were able to tune out to do a little bit of a live video,

00:18:56
just going over it so you could see first hand what was going

00:18:59
on. So the big news.

00:19:02
This week that happened with California was California's.

00:19:07
Gavin Newsom, a couple days ago sending out or leaking that memo

00:19:11
to the police chiefs that he's going to close all beaches

00:19:15
simply because he saw too many people in Huntington Beach on

00:19:18
the beach. And he thought that this was

00:19:21
violating public health guidelines, so he decided he was

00:19:25
going to crack down and close all the beaches as a panel to

00:19:27
everybody, which was swiftly met with huge pushback and this was

00:19:33
released leaked at 10:00 o'clock at night.

00:19:35
Next day within less than 24 hours.

00:19:38
To reverse that decision. Mostly because a lot of people

00:19:41
push back a lot of local leaders.

00:19:43
You know, a lot of I know for here in San Diego.

00:19:45
I know the mayor got on the phone and said, look, we've been

00:19:47
doing our part. We did it safely.

00:19:50
We have our precautions in place.

00:19:52
There's no reason to punish all of us just because Orange County

00:19:54
got out of hand. There was some sheriffs, I know.

00:19:56
Humboldt County said there is no way I'm going to enforce this.

00:20:00
This is ridiculous. And so within 24 hours, Gavin

00:20:06
Newsome backed down. He praised some of the state or

00:20:08
some of the beaches in the cities for doing a good job, but

00:20:12
ultimately he did say that OCC is going to be shut down.

00:20:15
Now here's the thing about why this is a big deal.

00:20:19
Orange County if you don't remember just recently flipped

00:20:21
blue and a lot of people thought this was a huge win for

00:20:24
Democrats. Orange County is still, it's not

00:20:27
out of the woods yet when it comes to it's not a Democratic

00:20:29
stronghold. I would still say it's very

00:20:32
Republican. There is a strong Republican

00:20:33
presence. In Orange County.

00:20:36
If there's one thing Gavin Newsom did right now, and this

00:20:39
is where he was, not a smart politician is to force all his

00:20:43
ire at Orange County specifically.

00:20:46
Now you've become the poster boy problem within Orange County.

00:20:51
And now you've created yourself. You made yourself out to be the

00:20:54
villain and nothing makes people unite and rebel faster than

00:20:58
making them feel like they are singled out specifically for

00:21:02
what they did. And in this case, Orange County.

00:21:06
Is going to and I believe that this will start to reignite a

00:21:10
lot of that Republican enthusiasm in Orange County.

00:21:13
He's essentially kicked up a Hornets nest in Orange County to

00:21:18
get people back out and push back against him and I know that

00:21:21
there's still people who I know Orange County is pushing back on

00:21:24
this. They've basically said look, he

00:21:26
can tell us what to do whatever we want.

00:21:28
We're still going to let people go back out on the beaches.

00:21:31
Orange County is not going to take this lying down and I'm

00:21:33
just going to throw up their hands.

00:21:35
And say OK yeah, sure, whatever, we'll, we'll abide by whatever

00:21:39
you tell us to do. We're just going to do it

00:21:41
because you're our supreme leader.

00:21:43
Orange County's not going to stand for that.

00:21:45
There's already been pushback. For example, OC supervisor

00:21:48
Michelle Steele, she called the Governor's actions arbitrary and

00:21:53
said it was an act of retribution against the county's

00:21:56
quote. We should be rewarding our

00:21:59
communities for practicing safe social distancing, not punishing

00:22:02
them. By closing down only Orange

00:22:04
County beaches, and this is not acceptable, she said.

00:22:06
I will be looking into the right response to the governors

00:22:09
overreaction and abuse of power. So obviously Orange County is

00:22:14
not going to take this lying down, and they're not going to

00:22:18
just let this fall the way it is.

00:22:20
I think they're going to push back.

00:22:21
They're going to, and this is going to awaken a lot of

00:22:24
Republicans in that county. So smart move by Gavin Newsom to

00:22:28
single out Orange County. Probably not, especially when

00:22:32
they were doing so well, I'm making an inroads there and now

00:22:35
you've made yourself the poster boy for problems, and

00:22:39
Republicans can really go after you.

00:22:41
Make this a campaign issue essentially this year and say

00:22:44
look, do you want more Democrats like Gavin Newsom running Orange

00:22:48
County, representing Orange County and a lot of people who

00:22:51
are fed up with it will probably say yeah, no, I don't want

00:22:54
Democrats like that representing me.

00:22:56
So now I want to move on to some clips that I told you I found

00:23:01
from Seth Meyers last night. He did have Gavin Newsom on.

00:23:05
We did talk about a couple things.

00:23:07
He talked about the beach closing, so I'll play that clip.

00:23:09
And then there's another clip that I want to play as well,

00:23:12
which is probably the more terrifying clip.

00:23:14
But let's start with the first clip him talking about what was

00:23:17
going on with the beaches. Californians?

00:23:20
Justifiably, so brag about their beaches.

00:23:22
We saw footage this past weekend of a lot of people crowding the

00:23:27
beaches. You just gave a press conference

00:23:29
where I think specifically in Orange County, you reinforce the

00:23:34
importance of staying. At home is that it must be hard.

00:23:37
You mentioned Kevin Fever, you know people wanna be outside.

00:23:41
No, I've spent my entire political life opening up beach

00:23:44
access, fighting for people's right to their beach and this

00:23:49
state. It's one of the reasons Horace

00:23:51
Greeley said go West young man go West in the 1850s as our

00:23:55
natural beauty and 1100 mile coastline, 800 miles of pristine

00:23:59
beaches. None more beautiful than down in

00:24:01
Orange County. One of the really most

00:24:03
magnificent bucolic parts of the world.

00:24:06
And so I hated to do it. But I had to do it on the basis

00:24:08
of the advice and counsel for my public health directors.

00:24:12
They're all saying the only way we can set this course back to

00:24:15
reopening with modifications. Our economy is to see the kind

00:24:19
of concentration that we saw on those beaches over the weekend,

00:24:22
and so we're going to do our best try to be collaborative and

00:24:25
cooperative. Most of the beaches over 100 did

00:24:28
everything right and the communities there really met the

00:24:31
moment. But unfortunately people really

00:24:33
eager to get out a little too much.

00:24:35
So last weekend, and so I just want to slow that down,

00:24:37
decompress a little bit, and then have a pathway to reopen

00:24:40
very quickly. So again, going after Orange

00:24:45
County specifically, he did backtrack and say what he's

00:24:50
basically repeating his press conference that a lot of the

00:24:52
beaches did a good job of staying within the boundaries

00:24:58
and the guidelines. But at this point I think

00:25:01
really, is this a fight? Is this a hill that Gavin Newsom

00:25:04
wants to die on? And he said that he wants to

00:25:06
open the beaches and he wants to reopen as fast as possible.

00:25:11
And I don't think this is a hill.

00:25:13
He wants to die on, and I think it's like I said, poking the

00:25:18
Hornets nest of specifically Orange County.

00:25:20
If this was LA, I would understand if this was San

00:25:23
Francisco, although there really aren't beaches up there in that

00:25:25
area. If this was LA and they said to

00:25:28
LA, people in Los Angeles as well, you can't go out to the

00:25:31
beach because you guys got a little rowdy.

00:25:32
A lot of people will probably comply with that and agree with

00:25:35
him, but Orange County is different and you've started a

00:25:38
little bit of a problem there for you and Democrats.

00:25:42
And this is not the hill that you can die on because

00:25:46
Californians pay a lot to live close to the beach.

00:25:49
And there's a reason why the rest of the country believes

00:25:52
that California is 2 miles wide and everybody lives on a beach

00:25:56
or close to Hollywood is because all the images you see are

00:25:59
people at beaches or San Diego, or surfing or Hollywood, or

00:26:03
stuff like that. You don't see the big counties

00:26:06
that are way up in what I like to call the state of Jefferson.

00:26:10
And in other news, just a side note, there's a county up there,

00:26:13
Modoc County, that basically just gave the middle finger to

00:26:16
Gavin Newsom and said, look, we're opening.

00:26:18
We don't care. There's nobody up here.

00:26:20
We've been practicing social distancing because we're

00:26:23
sparsely, densely hated or sparsely populated county and

00:26:26
there's no reason for us to keep doing these social distancing.

00:26:29
So they're basically thumbing their nose, so you're starting

00:26:31
to see a little bit more of this specific county starting to

00:26:36
fracture away from what the governor and the state orders

00:26:39
are saying, so I don't think this is a really good idea.

00:26:42
From the dial on this hill and a lot of people may say, well,

00:26:45
it's stupid. What's the big deal?

00:26:46
It's a beach. It's been there forever.

00:26:48
You're going to have the beach when this is over and I think in

00:26:51
California this is one of the things that it's not, only that

00:26:54
it's emblematic of the lockdown and what it is, and maybe the

00:26:58
craziness of these lockdowns if you go down to the beach.

00:27:01
People are walking around, people are milling around.

00:27:04
When we went down and walked around back when they opened up

00:27:09
the beach that it was this Monday this past Monday.

00:27:12
People walk, people were playing sports.

00:27:15
People were throwing the Frisbee around.

00:27:16
Someone was maybe sunbathing more than 102 hundred feet away

00:27:21
from anybody just laying out on this towel and a lot of people

00:27:23
can say what's the big harm in that.

00:27:25
It's not really harming anybody if you're all out there.

00:27:29
Keep me your social distancing, no ones sitting on top of each

00:27:32
other. I don't know.

00:27:33
I mean, this isn't the New Jersey shore.

00:27:35
And if anybody who's ever been in the New Jersey Shore

00:27:36
understands in the summer time it can get really crowded to the

00:27:41
point where you're literally sitting towel to towel.

00:27:44
And there's really no room but not in California, where there's

00:27:47
huge beaches, especially places like Orange County.

00:27:51
You can spread out and you can sit on a towel and be way far

00:27:54
away from anybody else. So why these are these things?

00:27:58
These are the issues that people are looking at, and they're

00:28:01
saying this is ridiculous. This is overburden, something.

00:28:04
This really has nothing to do with the virus anymore.

00:28:06
It's just about penalizing us because we don't comply.

00:28:10
With what you want us to do, and this is a bad hill for him to

00:28:14
die on. It was smart of him to back off.

00:28:19
Doesn't make him look like he's a flip flopper.

00:28:21
A little bit. Sure.

00:28:22
Do people say Oh well now he's being a very smart and pragmatic

00:28:26
politician. It was bad in the 1st place.

00:28:29
He could have just reprimanded them and said look he could have

00:28:32
handled this a little bit more diplomatically.

00:28:34
He could have called Orange County supervisor like Michelle

00:28:38
Steele and say look. I'm not crazy about how many

00:28:42
people are out on your beaches. Can you make a point to let them

00:28:46
know in a responsible way? Just take it easy, you know

00:28:49
social distance to whatever you have to, but he didn't do that.

00:28:52
Instead he just closed it down like they were a little child

00:28:55
and he was punishing them and putting them in timeout.

00:28:58
It's not the hill you want to die on, especially not in

00:29:01
California. People are very, very attached

00:29:05
to their beaches and their beach life here in California.

00:29:07
So not a good move on his part. But the next clip I'm going to

00:29:10
play you is a little bit more. Terrifying and probably a little

00:29:14
bit more scary if you look between the lines, we're going

00:29:16
to talk about that you mentioned three months ago.

00:29:21
The good news was this incredible budget surplus in

00:29:23
California budget surplus that allowed a budget to have a lot

00:29:27
of space for progressive issues. Things like climate change

00:29:31
things like addressing homelessness.

00:29:34
The reality is you are not going to be able to hold that surplus,

00:29:37
correct? No, not all that surplus is

00:29:40
gone. And by the way previous year

00:29:43
literally a year to go this month.

00:29:45
A year ago, this month we were announcing how we're going to

00:29:47
balance a $21.4 billion budget surplus.

00:29:51
I mean, it's just incredible how quickly things move.

00:29:54
The good news is we were prudent in terms of our investments.

00:29:57
One time surplus, one time investments paid down debt

00:30:01
started, pay down pension obligations, and it's a way of

00:30:04
saying this and forgive me because I've lost half the

00:30:06
people watching. Don't want to talk about

00:30:07
pensions? It's not why they watch your

00:30:09
show, but it's a way of saying this when you hear some

00:30:12
Republican leaders say we're not going to bail out these states

00:30:16
because of mismanagement. With all due respect,

00:30:19
California's been running surpluses.

00:30:21
We've been sending money to the federal government over the last

00:30:24
few decades to send to other states to help them, and I'm

00:30:28
really proud of this effort, and I can only say this.

00:30:30
We can't balance these budgets and protect the most vulnerable

00:30:33
without the federal government's help, we're going to need a

00:30:36
substantial amount of support. It's directly because of this

00:30:41
pandemic. It's not because of

00:30:42
mismanagement, it's because of pandemic and that's why we're

00:30:46
blessed to have speaker Nancy Pelosi from the state of

00:30:48
California and she's putting up now close to $1 trillion.

00:30:53
In separate bills to focus on the needs of states, counties

00:30:56
and cities. And I'll tell you what Seth just

00:30:58
flat out. We sent her a letter three weeks

00:31:01
ago, saying if you're not talking close to a trillion,

00:31:04
you're not having a serious conversation about the magnitude

00:31:06
of this crisis on budgets and the impact on police and fire

00:31:10
and health care workers and teachers all across this

00:31:13
country. And I'm really proud of her and

00:31:15
pleased that she's starting to socialize numbers at that level

00:31:18
because that's the level of this crisis and the impact over the

00:31:22
next three years. That these budgets are going to

00:31:25
feel there's a lot to unpack in that clip.

00:31:29
And if you listen closely, there is a lot of stuff that is

00:31:33
terrifying and a lot that you can take away from just that

00:31:38
little clip. Now, obviously Seth Meyers and I

00:31:40
just want to say this about Seth Meyers and all these late night

00:31:43
shows. Is it that hard to go on Amazon

00:31:47
and buy a $20 inline mic or a wireless mic or even a snowball

00:31:53
mic? Or any sort of mic that doesn't

00:31:55
make you sound like you're recording?

00:31:57
In a shoe box, I don't understand all these late night

00:32:00
hosts who get millions of dollars in budgets all of a

00:32:02
sudden they can't figure out how to use any sort of mics or

00:32:06
anything that Youtubers or podcasters have been using

00:32:08
forever. But regardless of that.

00:32:12
The issues there are so many issues to unpack here.

00:32:15
First off, let's talk about the fact that the $24 billion

00:32:18
surplus that Gavin Newsom likes to brag about is now gone.

00:32:22
And this is something I've said before.

00:32:24
It doesn't matter that there is a $24 billion surplus if you're

00:32:28
not spending it on anything, and if you have an enormous amount

00:32:31
of debt and deficit. And we've said this before, and

00:32:34
I'll beat the drum again and again and again.

00:32:37
California has a trillion dollars in unfunded pension

00:32:40
liabilities, 1 trillion. Dollars, so even if Nancy Pelosi

00:32:45
were to bail out her own nephew. And run out to the Congress and

00:32:50
say, OK, we need a trillion dollars to bail out California.

00:32:53
That would be the amount it would have to all go to

00:32:56
California to pay for their pension liabilities.

00:32:59
That's not to say that we won't get in this problem again.

00:33:02
Even if you were bailed out. But the scarier thing is not

00:33:06
that the $24 billion is gone. I mean, that is terrifying that

00:33:09
$24 billion. Where did it go?

00:33:12
Even the legislature starting to wonder where Gavin Newsom was

00:33:15
spending some of this money. He was recently caught.

00:33:19
Giving a billion dollars to a Chinese car manufacturer for

00:33:23
making PPE face masks and a lot of the legislature.

00:33:28
Even people in his own party were saying whoa, whoa whoa wait

00:33:30
a second. You can't appropriate this many

00:33:32
funds just for yourself and same thing with putting aside $75

00:33:35
million in cash payments for illegal immigrants struck down

00:33:39
by the California Supreme Court, saying you can't do that either.

00:33:41
So where did all this money go? Where did all this money go?

00:33:46
Where did he spend it? We won't know for a while, but

00:33:50
the scarier thing is this. Is that he pointed out that with

00:33:52
that $24 billion he was in Seth Meyers.

00:33:55
Kind of alluded to this. If you heard what you're saying

00:33:57
about climate change and different issues and green

00:34:01
energy and all that issue all the vogue things a celebrity

00:34:04
like Seth Meyers would obviously care about, because they've all

00:34:07
been pushing it. For years and years and years.

00:34:11
He said, well, now you can't go out and spend on these types of

00:34:17
measures. OK.

00:34:20
So what when you have? Personally, when you have a

00:34:25
surplus of money, let's talk about it on an individual

00:34:29
matter. OK, so California doesn't have

00:34:32
its big savings account anymore to go out and buy the things

00:34:35
that it's been wanting, or that it's on its big wish list.

00:34:39
Right so. Does that mean you get to go

00:34:44
somewhere else and have someone bail you out to get the things

00:34:47
that are not necessary? All on your wish list?

00:34:52
No. If you're an individual like you

00:34:55
are now here in the coronavirus and you are shut down and you're

00:34:59
quarantined and you've had to use your entire savings to just

00:35:03
put food on the table, or at least keep a roof over your

00:35:07
head. Or maybe at least keep your

00:35:08
business open. Maybe you're paying employees

00:35:11
with your savings account, who knows?

00:35:13
So this big surplus you may have amassed over the past couple of

00:35:16
years when the economy was really good is now gone, but you

00:35:20
don't get to go. To the government and say, well,

00:35:23
I spent all my savings and now I don't get to do the things like

00:35:26
I wanted to go to Disneyland or I want to take a trip to Europe

00:35:29
or I wanted to add a new addition on my house or put in a

00:35:32
pool or buy a new car or et cetera, et cetera.

00:35:37
You don't get to get your wish list things because your savings

00:35:40
ran out. That's what you're saving.

00:35:42
Savings are gone. I'm sorry that's what it's for.

00:35:44
It's for a rainy day so you don't get to bail out so that

00:35:49
California could go ahead and push forward.

00:35:52
With these progressive. Initiatives.

00:35:56
Just because now you're savings is gone.

00:35:59
No, that's you're not getting bailed out.

00:36:02
Every state got hit. Every state had to figure out

00:36:06
what to do in this crisis. And every state is going to have

00:36:10
to look at well, what's crucial now.

00:36:12
How do we get back to normal? How do we kind of get our budget

00:36:15
back under order? That's what every state is going

00:36:18
to have to do. Now, if there's an issue, if

00:36:21
there is an emergency, and I'm not even a big fan of this.

00:36:25
I'm sort of along with Mitch McConnell that if you hit

00:36:28
bankruptcy and you can't balance your budgets now, the fact is

00:36:31
California lost all its surplus. It's going to have lost revenue

00:36:34
tax revenue because it lost 1/4 of the year to coronavirus.

00:36:38
And the longer Gavin Newsom keeps this shut down.

00:36:41
He's going to lose even more tax revenue.

00:36:45
He's now going to have a problem where his books are not going to

00:36:48
be well balanced. You're going to have enormous

00:36:51
amounts of debt. Enormous amounts of deficit not

00:36:54
being able to. Pay any of that stuff.

00:36:59
Here's an idea for Gavin Newsom. Like that individual who stuck

00:37:04
at home and spent his entire savings to keep a roof over his

00:37:08
head and to feed his family. Or to keep the lights on, or to

00:37:11
pay employees. You know that rainy day in case

00:37:15
of emergency savings fund, he won't get to use it for the fun

00:37:18
things he's been wishing for. Maybe Gavin Newsom needs to go

00:37:22
back to the legislature and say, OK, we need to revise our budget

00:37:25
to figure out how we're going to work within this new paradigm.

00:37:30
What are things that are essential and non essential?

00:37:33
Where can we cut back what's way stuff like that?

00:37:35
But that's not what a progressive like Gavin Newsom

00:37:38
sees. See he has a clear vision of

00:37:42
what he wants to do, what he wants to enact.

00:37:44
He knows. And he said this in a previous

00:37:48
interview which I talked about that he wants to, or he sees the

00:37:53
opportunity to push for a progressive form of capitalism

00:37:56
coming out of this. So just because the the state

00:38:02
might be flat broke at this point, it doesn't mean he's not

00:38:05
going to run to anti Nancy and have her bail him out and give

00:38:09
him billions of dollars to replenish his surplus.

00:38:13
So now he can go out and get his progressive wish list.

00:38:17
And if this should infuriate the individual, because if you're no

00:38:22
one's been coming to help a lot of individuals here in

00:38:25
California, millions of people are unemployed.

00:38:27
California businesses are drawing up.

00:38:29
I haven't seen anyone who's really gotten too much help from

00:38:32
the state in the sense of I don't know any state grants or

00:38:35
stuff like that. I don't even really know anybody

00:38:37
who's talked about it. It's always been coming from the

00:38:39
federal government with the PPP loans and the economic injury

00:38:42
disaster alone. Outside of that, I haven't heard

00:38:45
California rushing to send. Millions of dollars to help its

00:38:50
small businesses. Have you?

00:38:51
Has anyone heard of California helping the small business owner

00:38:55
has any unemployment checks that were supposed to go out as fast

00:38:59
as possible? Are still three weeks behind

00:39:02
four weeks behind? They still haven't gotten their

00:39:04
first paycheck. It's now we've now gone so far

00:39:07
into the crisis. That by the time they start

00:39:10
getting their unemployment we should be reopening.

00:39:13
We're actually on the other side of this now that we should be

00:39:16
reopening. And people should be going back

00:39:19
to work and the unemployment won't be worth anything.

00:39:23
But those people still had to scrape by and get through an

00:39:26
entire six weeks 8 weeks. Without any help from the

00:39:30
government, so California basically did zilch to help its

00:39:34
citizens to help its small businesses to bail them out.

00:39:39
And a lot of these individuals and small businesses should be

00:39:42
upset that they had to figure out and make sacrifices and

00:39:45
figure out what they're going to do with their businesses moving

00:39:48
forward. Their business budgets are going

00:39:50
to be different. Their business budgets aren't

00:39:52
going to be the same. Maybe they were on track to

00:39:56
expand. Maybe they were on track to add

00:39:58
more space or buy a new piece of property.

00:40:00
Maybe they are on track to add a couple dozen new employees.

00:40:04
Now they can't. Now that wish list is gone

00:40:07
because they may have had to use all their saved up money and all

00:40:09
their capital just to keep the doors open.

00:40:12
But Gavin Newsom doesn't see things that way for his

00:40:15
government. He sees things as I wanted these

00:40:19
things. I want climate change

00:40:22
initiatives. I want progressive initiatives

00:40:24
here in California to help the most vulnerable.

00:40:28
Then you could fill in the blanks of whoever you want him

00:40:30
to be. The vote most vulnerable.

00:40:34
Whatever that means, but he still wants his wish.

00:40:37
List of progressive policies. And if that doesn't wake up a

00:40:43
lot of people in California to the idea that they don't care

00:40:48
about the little guy, they don't care about the middle class, and

00:40:50
they don't care about small businesses that should terrify

00:40:53
you. Because here he is.

00:40:58
Basically saying I don't have to be responsible with your tax

00:41:03
dollars. Let me say that again, Gavin

00:41:08
Newsom is essentially saying I don't have to be responsible

00:41:11
with your tax dollars. I just want more tax dollars so

00:41:15
I can get my progressive initiatives passed.

00:41:19
Instead of being the pragmatic politician like I said, who

00:41:22
should figure out what to do moving forward and maybe all

00:41:27
those progressive things that he couldn't do are now put by the

00:41:31
wayside. He still goes and asks for a

00:41:37
trillion dollars or he's asking that Nancy Pelosi at least.

00:41:40
Gets a trillion dollars which I doubt will ever pass and I doubt

00:41:46
that the President might ever pass it, because at this point

00:41:49
we've already printed, made up, pulled money out of the air.

00:41:53
How many trillions of dollars out of the air right now?

00:41:55
And now you want a trillion dollars?

00:41:58
And I'm not the only one saying this.

00:42:00
I'm not the only one who is saying that this is a problem.

00:42:04
People saw this coming down the Pike 2 weeks ago.

00:42:07
And This is why Mitch McConnell came out and said I'm not going

00:42:11
to help bail out all these states.

00:42:13
You screwed up bad mismanagement and even President Trump said

00:42:16
bad mismanagement of your budgets does not mean that we're

00:42:19
going to bail you out just because of this coronavirus.

00:42:25
That's not how this works. If you had bad budgets before,

00:42:28
it doesn't mean that you get to use the coronavirus as an excuse

00:42:32
to get all this bailout money. How do you figure that out?

00:42:36
It's real simple. Go back.

00:42:40
And I heard a reporter asked this, a President Trump.

00:42:42
How do you figure out what was bad management?

00:42:46
Was it due to the coronavirus or poor management?

00:42:49
It's not that hard. Go back.

00:42:55
To February and prior to all the shutdowns was the state in

00:43:00
trouble before if the state was in trouble before.

00:43:04
That's bad mismanagement and you don't get a bailout because of

00:43:07
that. And it like here in California,

00:43:11
if you had a trillion dollars in unfunded pension liabilities.

00:43:16
Before all this happened, that doesn't mean you get to come out

00:43:20
and say, well, I need a trillion dollars so that because I just

00:43:24
need to need help because of the coronavirus.

00:43:27
No, no, you had that liability long before coronavirus ever

00:43:32
even showed up on our shores. Same thing with New York and New

00:43:36
York City. All these States and cities who

00:43:39
are high tax who spend their money Willy nilly who have no

00:43:42
issue with waste or fraud or abuse when it comes to taxpayer

00:43:46
money. All of a sudden.

00:43:47
Are you running to the federal government with their hands up?

00:43:51
In California, will probably be one of the first in line to say,

00:43:53
oh look, we bail out so many people because we're the

00:43:57
California word. This booming economy and blah

00:43:59
blah blah blah. Sure there is an argument that

00:44:03
we do give a lot of federal aid back or federal money back.

00:44:07
That goes to the government. But that's because you like to

00:44:11
brag where, like the 5th largest economy in the world or

00:44:14
something like that. I don't know what constantly

00:44:16
shifts up and down. It's always 5th or 7th or

00:44:19
whatever. However, largest phony.

00:44:24
You want to brag about being a big economy.

00:44:26
OK, so you do actually give more in taxes because you make more.

00:44:31
You raise more revenue for the entire country.

00:44:33
That's a good thing, you know, because if you're a successful

00:44:36
economic person usually what happens when you're successful

00:44:39
economically in this country you end up do spending more money in

00:44:42
taxes because that's how our system as a progressive tax

00:44:45
system is made. But that's besides the point.

00:44:49
I guess California doesn't like the progressive tax code when it

00:44:53
doesn't apply to them. Or when it does apply to.

00:44:58
So it's terrifying to hear that he thinks that he's entitled to

00:45:02
this bailout money. That he thinks Nancy Pelosi is

00:45:05
going to ramrod this trillion dollar bill through to help bail

00:45:09
out the states. I don't think that's how this

00:45:12
works. You had a $24 billion rainy day

00:45:19
fund because it was supposed to be used in case of emergencies

00:45:24
like this. This is the ultimate rainy day

00:45:27
right now. And you built it up and good for

00:45:31
you. You were able to build up this

00:45:33
$24 billion surplus. And now it's gone, it's sad.

00:45:39
But why not look into how to rebuild that through better

00:45:44
budgetary management rather? Than just asking Nancy Pelosi

00:45:51
for a huge bailout. So there are a couple articles I

00:45:56
was going to talk about and then I found these clips and I wanted

00:45:59
to talk about a little bit more. I'm still going to post them up

00:46:02
in the show notes. I want to get too far into it

00:46:05
because if I get into it another topic this is going to start

00:46:07
really going over an hour and really trying to keep these

00:46:10
shows under an hour under 5040 minutes.

00:46:15
So with that I'm going to end this show a today.

00:46:20
Like I always say, if you want to call into the show, you want

00:46:23
to leave a voice message for the show which will be played like

00:46:26
Jim's voice message. Last week you can go to anchor

00:46:29
dot FM California underground and leave a voice message.

00:46:33
Play it on the show. Answer your question in the show

00:46:37
if you just want to email me a question that wants to be read

00:46:39
on the show. You can also do that as well.

00:46:42
Going underground at protonmail.com.

00:46:45
Follow us on social media. The most active place is

00:46:48
Instagram. That's right.

00:46:49
Do a lot of stuff and post a lot of stuff.

00:46:51
And that's also very simple. California Underground, so make

00:46:55
sure to like this podcast. Subscribe, leave a review that

00:47:00
helps out. Share it with other people who

00:47:02
are interested in this kind of news and reflection on

00:47:06
California politics. Because there is a lot going on

00:47:08
in California, and obviously you're not going to get it from

00:47:11
the national news and you need someone who is going to break it

00:47:14
down. Specifically, because especially

00:47:16
now. With the lockdowns going on, I

00:47:19
mean there's always a lot of political news going on.

00:47:21
In California is an enormous state, and there's a lot of

00:47:26
issues, a lot of politics going on here, and that's what I try

00:47:29
and break down, but I've set this before.

00:47:31
I don't want this to just be me and my soapbox.

00:47:34
I want this to be a show where people can interact, and the

00:47:39
more people interact it can be used as a launching pad as a

00:47:43
bullhorn to other people who are interested in talking about this

00:47:46
type of stuff. That's what this podcast is for.

00:47:49
This podcast is created as a vehicle for people who are like

00:47:55
the intro says, whether you're a conservative libertarian or

00:48:00
you're a moderate Democrat, or you're just someone who thinks

00:48:03
things are getting a little out of hand here in California.

00:48:05
It doesn't really matter. You just want to get back to a

00:48:09
normal, responsible California that's not off the rails with

00:48:13
overspending and high taxes, and too many regulations.

00:48:17
That's what the point of the show is, so the more people who

00:48:21
share it and the more people who interact.

00:48:22
I can guarantee this show will get just.

00:48:26
They'll be even better if more people really start to interact

00:48:31
sending questions, send in voice messages, share it with people

00:48:35
who think like this or who think would really benefit from a show

00:48:39
like this, or want to talk about stuff like this.

00:48:43
And with that I'm going to end. Take care.

00:48:46
There's little protests, I think today and tomorrow check fully

00:48:51
open sea on Instagram. They have all the information.

00:48:56
If you're one of the lucky counties who gets to go out to

00:48:58
the beach and enjoy the beach this weekend, enjoy some

00:49:00
sunshine. You got those coronavirus and so

00:49:04
you can actually see on the next one.

00:49:34
Thank you for listening to another episode of California

00:49:36

00:49:38
remember to subscribe like and review it and follow California

00:49:41
Underground on social media for updates as to when new episodes

00:49:44
are available. If you're a California

00:00:07
Conservative, a libertarian, a moderate Democrat, believe in

00:00:10
common sense, or just the same person, this is the political

00:00:14
podcast for you. It's the California Underground

00:00:17
podcast. What's going on?

00:00:22
Everybody thinking the tunes to another episode of the

00:00:24
California Underground spill. Happy mayday.

00:00:29
At the time of this recording, dozens well, probably a handful

00:00:34
of protest going on right now all over the state, including

00:00:37
Sacramento, San Francisco, Huntington Beach, San Diego.

00:00:41
I'm not sure if there's one going on in LA, but there were a

00:00:43
whole bunch of which I mentioned last week.

00:00:45
If you've been following on Instagram handles fully open CA

00:00:50
right now they have. Protests going on all over the

00:00:53
place. I think there might be more

00:00:54
protests going on tomorrow if you want to find out what

00:00:58
they're doing. You wanna check in, support them

00:01:00
to whatever protests have been happening.

00:01:02
Protests happened last weekend as well, which I will talk about

00:01:05
a little bit on the show because I was down there at the one here

00:01:08
in San Diego, Pacific Beach. So with that there's a lot to

00:01:13
always get to, especially with the coronavirus the Rona

00:01:17
happening right now. And as people were starting to

00:01:20
head out of it and he started to see.

00:01:22
May 1st a lot of states.

00:01:49
starting to reopen California. Still very reluctant.

00:01:51
We're going to get into that. But let's start with our out of

00:01:54
the gate monologue. You always see people joke about

00:01:58
how 1984 is here and we've now crossed into an Orwellian world

00:02:02
without knowing it. This of course was pre pandemic,

00:02:06
but now the laughter is turning into smoldering anger over

00:02:09
what's going on in our country. If you're not too familiar with

00:02:13
1984 outside of the fact that it is a book about a dystopian

00:02:15
future, here's a quick summary. There's an individual by the

00:02:19
name of Winston Smith, who lives and works in this dystopian

00:02:21
future country of Oceana, where Big Brother that's where the

00:02:25
term comes from and the party basically control every aspect

00:02:29
of your life. The party strongly forbids any

00:02:32
sort of free thought, or as they like to call it.

00:02:34
Quote a thought crime. In Oceana, you were given a

00:02:38
specific job, and you're constantly monitored for any

00:02:41
disobedience. The hero of the story begins to

00:02:43
question things because he specifically remembers things

00:02:46
differently than the Ministry of Truth puts them out.

00:02:50
Since it works at the ministry and is responsible for

00:02:52
correcting old story, he sees it first hand.

00:02:55
However, he fears being vaporized for starting to

00:02:58
question the narrative around him.

00:03:00
Individuals around him stare blindly into a TV screen where

00:03:03
Big Brother feeds them. The daily lies the state wants

00:03:06
you to regurgitate. Probably seen it in the famous

00:03:09
Apple 1984 commercial as a hero looks around, he sees everyone

00:03:13
succumbing to the lies and the disinformation frothing

00:03:16
themselves into a fervor. Now I won't go too far into

00:03:20
detail. The rest of the story because I

00:03:22
don't want to spoil it for you, and also it's a good story.

00:03:26
But we see early similarities between that story and now.

The new spread like wildfire and

00:04:11
news channels quickly picked it up, but as soon as they explode

00:04:14
onto the scene, any video of them was taken down as

00:04:16
disinformation or violating community guidelines by the big

00:04:20
tech companies. It was memory hold, or at least

00:04:23
they tried to memory hold it. The mainstream media and the

00:04:26
tech companies aren't the only ones making sure you abide by

00:04:29
party rules similar to the manic viewers of Big Brother.

00:04:33
In 1984, the media has essentially wiped the populace

00:04:36
into a fear induced panic over the coronavirus.

00:04:40
Fear is a powerful motivator and you see it everywhere on the

00:04:44
news and social media. People parroting the same

00:04:47
talking points over and over again.

00:04:50
You've heard them before. We must stay home to flatten the

00:04:53
curve. We can't even think about

00:04:55
opening the economy. Well, everyone can be tested.

00:04:58
I know it hurts but we're all in this together and my personal

00:05:02
favorite if we reopen too early we will end up killing millions

00:05:07
of people. The same point echoed again and

00:05:11
again want to question what's going on with the facts and

00:05:14
statistics. That's a thought crime and you

00:05:16
should be ashamed for thinking such things.

00:05:18
In fact, if you get particularly cheeky response, it might

00:05:21
include a nice little doctored waiver saying you waive all

00:05:24
right to medical care for having such incorrect thoughts.

00:05:28
Now finally, our Hero 1984 is constantly looking over his

00:05:31
shoulder for fear that someone might snitch on him and get him

00:05:34
vaporized for thought crimes. Today, there is no need to worry

00:05:38
about. How tyrannical governments can

00:05:40
impose and enforce such strict measures.

00:05:41
When you have a brainwashed populace ready to tattle on

00:05:44
every person who is not strictly abiding by arbitrary guidelines,

00:05:48
don't think that's true. Just look at what Mayor Garcetti

00:05:51
said in a press conference. He said, you know what they say

00:05:55
about snitches? Well, in this case snitches get

00:05:59
rewards. No need for there to be a police

00:06:02
everywhere when you have scared the populace into doing the

00:06:05
policing for you. Of course we are far from the

00:06:08
dark and bleak world of 1904, but its story is no less

00:06:12
pertinent today than ever. George Orwell said that 1984 was

00:06:16
to be a cautionary tale, not an instruction manual.

00:06:19
However, the heroes of today don't have to worry about being

00:06:22
vaporized. There are heroes who stand out

00:06:24
on street corners, waving signs to open up the country.

00:06:26
Again, heroes, such as doctors who go against the grain and

00:06:30
tell you there is not a rational reason for being completely shut

00:06:33
down. There are Winston Smiths all

00:06:35
over this country, willing to push back on the party's

00:06:38
tyranny. Thought crimes aren't completely

00:06:41
illegal yet, so again. I urge those out there who have

00:06:46
questions and concerns to speak up.

00:06:48
It is only when our voices are made loud enough and joined

00:06:51
together when people begin to question what's going on for the

00:06:54
sake of our country and to ensure 1984 remains a work of

00:06:57
fiction. Engage in thought crimes.

00:07:57
Biden thing and the double standard that's happening and

00:08:00
how it really does tie in to what's going on here locally.

00:08:06
This Morning Joe Biden went on Morning Joe with Mika

00:08:08
Brzezinski, who was supposed to be giving him these hardball

00:08:11
questions. If you heard it, she had

00:08:13
obviously pain in her voice, as if every single question that

00:08:17
she answered asked her in a physical and emotional way.

00:09:29
and there's no way we must believe in allow him the chance

00:09:34
to defend himself and prove that he's innocent.

00:10:23
Supreme Court, because obviously this man's going to be on the

00:10:27
Supreme Court forever and affect millions of lives because he's

00:10:30
this sexual predator and this monster who's out there on the

00:10:33
Supreme Court as opposed to let's say the leader of the free

00:10:36
world who has enormous influence over.

00:10:39
Millions if not billions of lives because of the fact that

00:10:44
he's the leader of America and we have influence all over the

00:10:47
world. But that doesn't really matter

00:10:49
to the left. Now the left is really kind of

00:10:50
backtracked. So what I'm trying to do is, I'm

00:10:53
trying to tie this into here locally in California.

00:10:56
It's not just the Joe Biden issue.

00:10:58
The double standards exist on both sides.

00:11:01
If you don't, you're not aware of the fact of Gavin Newsome's

00:11:05
incredulous history of what happened with him and Kimberly

00:11:08
Gilfoy. He did cheat on her and he

00:11:11
cheated on her with one of his best friend's wives and it was

00:11:15
called out to our attention mostly through Travis Allen

00:11:20
during the gubernatorial debate back a couple of years ago.

00:11:24
Here's a clip of it we can't trust Gavin with his best

00:11:27
friend's wife. How can you trust him with your

00:11:29
state? Yeah, I mean it's it's hard with

00:11:31
respect to to hear from Mr. Allen who's a devout supporter

00:11:35
of Donald Trump, talk about the issue of sexual harassment.

00:11:41
A devout supporter. I mean it was number.

00:11:45
Surprise that Travis Allen positioned himself as the maggot

00:11:49
candidate, the Trump candidate for the gubernatorial race, as

00:11:52
opposed to feckless John Cox, who really didn't do anything.

00:11:56
As soon as he made the list, or as soon as he made the ticket,

00:11:59
he seemed to roll over, but that's all different story, but

00:12:01
you notice how all of a sudden they keep pushing away and they

00:12:05
keep deflecting on this issue in the sense that it doesn't matter

00:12:08
if the Democrats did it. Donald Trump is an awful human

00:12:12
being and orange man bad, and obviously, he said.

00:12:16
That horrible thing on the Hollywood access tape with I

00:12:19
forget who his name is. I mean he's such a flash in the

00:12:22
pan at this point. I don't even really care who he

00:12:23
is. Who leaked that tape.

00:12:25
But as you can see, they always push back on it so they're only

00:12:28
response. And I mean, if that was your

00:12:31
only card to play, I guess I would play that too and push

00:12:34
back. But there is a difference here

00:12:36
in the sense that yeah, there have been people who have

00:12:37
accused Donald Trump or not so much as in this case where there

00:12:42
is somebody who. I mean there were some people

00:12:45
who tried to come out and. Accused Donald Trump and it

00:12:48
didn't really work and people looked at it.

00:12:49
Like, yeah, OK, we don't believe you.

00:12:51
And you're obviously a little crazy.

00:12:53
I think the last person who came out and tried to accuse Donald

00:12:56
Trump made such an embarrassment of herself on CNN and Anderson

00:13:00
Cooper. He literally had to cut away

00:13:02
because he started to believe this is literally unraveling as

00:13:06
we're airing this segment live with her.

00:13:08
So we're now going to have to cut away to a commercial and get

00:13:10
rid of her because it's just so bad.

00:13:13
But you can see that they always kind of push it back on.

00:13:16
Well, you know, even though I was incredulous and I cheated on

00:13:20
my wife, you have Donald Trump who runs around saying grab them

00:13:23
by the you know what? How dare you even make that

00:13:27
comparison to me, it doesn't change the fact that you're not

00:13:30
accountable. I'm not going to sit here and

00:13:31
say that whatever Donald Trump did if he did or did not do it

00:13:35
doesn't change the fact that it's still a bad standard to

00:13:38
set. You can't say well, because I

00:13:41
cheated on my wife. Therefore it's OK because Donald

00:13:45
Trump is a horrible person. No, those are still inherently

00:13:49
bad things, and using Donald Trump as a scapegoat is kind of

00:13:53
saying well, as long as the president does it, I'm OK.

00:13:56
And that's become the sort of the double standard as well.

00:14:00
A Republican can do it, and it's an awful horrible thing.

00:14:03
And we must believe all women we must.

00:14:07
Make sure that you know the man is accused is 100% guilty until

00:14:11
proven innocent as opposed to on the other side.

00:14:13
Where if your Democrat, well, there's a reason.

00:14:15
Maybe maybe it's something that there was a bigger issue, maybe

00:14:19
I don't know. Maybe, but there's all these

00:14:21
different reasons we have to give them the benefit of the

00:14:23
doubt. Let them figure this out.

00:14:25
But you still can't just point to Donald Trump and say, well,

00:14:28
Donald Trump's a horrible, disgusting misogynist human

00:14:30
being. Therefore it's all right.

00:14:33
And he did, you know, Gavin Newsom, if I've said anything,

00:14:36
I've said that he's a very clever and very clever and smart

00:14:42
politician. He knew when he said that he was

00:14:45
able to get a reaction from the crowd.

00:14:46
He was able to move it around. A lot of people picked up on it.

00:14:49
There's some people who said that whatever Travis Allen said

00:14:52
was kill shot. It was really good.

00:14:54
Some people who saw the debate also said that what?

00:14:57
Gavin Newsom, how he deflected, was the perfect way to deflect

00:15:01
because it's orange, man bad when it comes down to it.

00:15:03
So what does it matter? Donald Trump is, supposedly,

00:15:06
this is the. Poster for the American poster

00:15:12
boy of sexual harassment in this country.

00:15:14
So even if you vote for Donald Trump, there's no way you can

00:15:17
point out what Democrats did because, well, you voted for

00:15:19
Donald Trump. Which doesn't really make sense,

00:15:22
and I guess it's one way to deflect.

00:15:24
And like I said, if it's your only card right now and you

00:15:27
really have nowhere to go and the Democrats have put kind of

00:15:31
painted themselves in this corner.

00:15:35
Where they have to go back and say, well, all that me to

00:15:39
believe all women. Is now no longer well, there's

00:15:42
some conditions, and there's it's a little different now.

00:15:44
When it's Joe Biden and they know they're caught.

00:15:48
They know they're caught in a rock and a hard place, and they

00:15:50
either cave on what they said before.

00:15:54
Or they stand up for it and they go after Joe Biden.

00:16:00
So I don't think this is over and I don't think a softball

00:16:02
interview like the one Joe. How Mika Brzezinski, where she

00:16:06
was so pained and agonizing over every question she felt so.

00:16:11
But Mr Vice President, sorry I'm sorry I have to ask you this

00:16:15
horrible questions, but you're such a good friend and I have to

00:16:19
do this because I'm a journalist and if anyone believes Mika

00:16:22
Brzezinski is a journalist, well I have a bridge to sell you.

00:16:25
But I want to move on back to the local news.

00:16:28
I just wanted to tie that in because I just wanted to show

00:16:31
sort of the double standard and sort of the shell game that

00:16:34
they've been playing with this whole terror.

00:16:35
Read me too. Sexual harassment thing with Joe

00:16:38
Biden. I did go to the.

00:16:42
Protest last week down in Pacific Beach.

00:16:46
I was there in an official capacity to keep an eye on

00:16:49
things as an attorney. And I I will tell you this, I

00:16:54
was all about 200 people. It was well attended.

00:16:58
Nobody got out of hand. Nobody caused any violence.

00:17:01
Nobody broke any store windows. There were a ton of red maga

00:17:05
hats. There were a ton of flags or a

00:17:07
ton of Trump flags. And it was.

00:17:10
It was well attended and it was very calm and a lot of people I

00:17:16
know in the community were very upset about that because they

00:17:18
thought. Obviously, if you go out and

00:17:19
protest, you're going to kill grandma by going out and

00:17:23
protesting. But it seemed pretty calm and I

00:17:27
don't have to give credit to the San Diego Police Department.

00:17:29
They did a good job of just keeping an eye on everything and

00:17:32
letting people exercise their First Amendment rights.

00:17:36
Just making sure they stayed off the sidewalk.

00:17:38
Stuff like that. Don't block the roads.

00:17:40
You can stay on the sidewalk. And protests.

00:17:43
At a certain point, you could just see that people were going

00:17:45
around in their cars. They were sort of creating this

00:17:48
caravan. A little parade just going back

00:17:50
and forth causing all this ruckus and noise.

00:17:53
So All in all, it was a very well attended well taken well.

00:17:59
Everyone's well behaved. I guess you could say and it

00:18:02
wasn't a Antifa protest. Not where you see Antifa going

00:18:06
in, and they just start breaking stuff for no reason.

00:18:09
They start throwing trash cans through Starbucks, windows, or

00:18:12
hitting people, or throwing off smoke grenades.

00:18:14
It was just people standing around signs and American flags

00:18:17
and shouting and doing what a peaceful.

00:18:19
I would say that was a peaceful protest.

00:18:21
Nothing went wrong, no legal legal happened.

00:18:25
No one was arrested. It was all very up and up, and

00:18:27
I'm sure I haven't seen really a lot of the footage of what's

00:18:30
going on today. For tomorrow yet, but I'm sure a

00:18:34
lot of people are doing the same thing and the different cities

00:18:37
right now that fully open California is doing right now.

00:18:40
I'm sure they're very well respected.

00:18:41
I'm sure they're following the rules.

00:18:43
They know what their rights are, and they're not really.

00:18:46
They're not really causing too much of a problem right now, so

00:18:50
I just want to give you that little update and just first

00:18:53
hand. If you were able to tune out to

00:18:54
do a little bit of a live video, just going over it so you could

00:18:58
see first hand what was going on.

00:19:00
So the big news this week that happened with California was

00:19:04
California. Gavin Newsom, a couple days ago

00:19:09
sending out or leaking that memo to the police chiefs that he's

00:19:12
going to close all beaches simply because he saw too many

00:19:16
people in Huntington Beach on the beach.

00:19:20
And he thought that this was violating public health

00:19:23
guidelines, so he decided he was going to crack down and close

00:19:26
all the beaches as a panel to everybody, which was swiftly met

00:19:30
with huge pushback and this was released leaked at 10:00 o'clock

00:19:34
at night. Next day within less than 24

00:19:37
hours. To reverse that decision.

00:19:40
Mostly because a lot of people push back a lot of local

00:19:42
leaders. You know, a lot of I know for

00:19:45
here in San Diego. I know the mayor got on the

00:19:46
phone and said, look, we've been doing our part.

00:19:48
We did it safely. We have our precautions in

00:19:51
place. There's no reason to punish all

00:19:53
of us just because Orange County got out of hand.

00:19:55
There was some sheriffs, I know. Humboldt County said there is no

00:19:58
way I'm going to enforce this. This is ridiculous.

00:20:03
And so within 24 hours, Gavin Newsom backed down.

00:20:07
He praised some of the state or some of the beaches in the

00:20:10
cities for doing a good job, but ultimately he did say that OCC

00:20:14
is going to be shut down. Now.

00:20:16
Here's the thing about why this is a big deal.

00:20:19
Orange County if you don't remember, just recently flipped

00:20:21
blue and allow people thought this was a huge win for

00:20:24
Democrats. Orange County is still, it's not

00:20:27
out of the woods yet when it comes to it's not a Democratic

00:20:29
stronghold. I would still say it's very

00:20:32
Republican. There is a strong Republican

00:20:33
presence. In Orange County.

00:20:36
If there's one thing Gavin Newsom did right now, and this

00:20:39
is where he was, not a smart politician is to force all his

00:20:43
ire at Orange County specifically.

00:20:46
Now you've become the poster boy problem within Orange County.

00:20:51
And now you've created yourself. You made yourself out to be the

00:20:54
villain and nothing makes people unite and rebel faster than

00:20:58
making them feel like they are singled out specifically for

00:21:02
what they did. And in this case, Orange County.

00:21:06
Is going to and I believe that this will start to reignite a

00:21:10
lot of that Republican enthusiasm in Orange County.

00:21:13
He's essentially kicked up a Hornets nest in Orange County to

00:21:18
get people back out and push back against him and I know that

00:21:21
there's still people who I know Orange County is pushing back on

00:21:24
this. They've basically said look, he

00:21:26
can tell us what to do whatever we want.

00:21:28
We're still going to let people go back out on the beaches.

00:21:31
Orange County is not going to take this lying down and not

00:21:33
just going to throw up their hands.

00:21:35
And say OK yeah, sure, whatever, we'll, we'll abide by whatever

00:21:39
you tell us to do. We're just going to do it

00:21:41
because you're our supreme leader.

00:21:43
Orange County's not going to stand for that.

00:21:45
There's already been pushback. For example, OC supervisor

00:21:48
Michelle Steele, she called the Governor's actions arbitrary and

00:21:53
said it was an act of retribution against the county's

00:21:56
quote. We should be rewarding our

00:21:59
communities for practicing safe social distancing, not punishing

00:22:02
them. By closing down only Orange

00:22:04
County beaches, and this is not acceptable, she said.

00:22:06
I will be looking into the right response to the governor's

00:22:09
overreaction and abuse of power.

00:22:51
are fed up with it will probably say.

00:22:53
Yeah, no, I don't want Democrats like that representing me.

00:22:56
So what? Now I want to move on to some

00:22:59
clips that I told you I found from Seth Meyers last night.

00:23:02
He did have Gavin Newsom on. We did talk about a couple

00:23:06
things. He talked about the beach

00:23:08
closing, so I'll play that clip. And then there's another clip

00:23:11
that I want to play as well, which is probably the more

00:23:13
terrifying clip. But let's start with the first

00:23:15
clip him talking about what was going on with the beaches.

00:23:19
Californians? Justifiably, so brag about their

00:23:22
beaches. We saw footage this past weekend

00:23:25
of a lot of people crowding the beaches.

00:23:27
You just gave a press conference where I think specifically in

00:23:32
Orange County, you reinforce the importance of staying.

00:23:35
At home is that it must be hard. You mentioned Kevin Fever, you

00:23:39
know people wanna be outside. No, I've spent my entire

00:23:42
political life opening up beach access, fighting for people's

00:23:46
right to their beach and this state.

00:23:49
It's one of the reasons horse Greeley said go West young man

00:23:53
go West in the 1850s as our natural beauty and 1100 mile

00:23:57
coastline, 800 miles of pristine beaches, none more beautiful

00:24:01
than down in Orange County. One of the really most

00:24:03
magnificent bucolic parts of the world.

00:24:06
And so I hated to do it. But I had to do it on the basis

00:24:08
of the advice and counsel for my public health directors.

00:24:12
They're all saying the only way we can set this course back to

00:24:15
reopening with modifications. Our economy is to see the kind

00:24:19
of concentration that we saw on those beaches over the weekend,

00:24:22
and so we're going to do our best try to be collaborative and

00:24:25
cooperative. Most of the beaches over 100 did

00:24:28
everything right and the communities there really met the

00:24:31
moment. But unfortunately people really

00:24:33
eager to get out a little too much.

00:24:35
So last weekend, and so I just want to slow that down,

00:24:37
decompress a little bit, and then have a pathway to reopen

00:24:40
very quickly. So again, going after Orange

00:24:45
County specifically, he did backtrack and say what he's

00:24:50
basically repeating his press conference that a lot of the

00:24:52
beaches did a good job of staying within the boundaries

00:24:58
and the guidelines. But at this point I think

00:25:01
really, is this a fight? Is this a hill that Gavin Newsom

00:25:04
wants to die on? And he said that he wants to

00:25:06
open the beaches and he wants to reopen as fast as possible.

00:25:11
And I don't think this is a hill.

00:25:13
He wants to die on, and I think it's like I said, poking the

00:25:18
Hornets nest of specifically Orange County.

00:25:20
If this was LA. I would understand if this was

00:25:23
San Francisco, although there really aren't beaches up there

00:25:25
in that area. If this was LA and they said to

00:25:28
LA, people in Los Angeles, well, you can't go out to the beach

00:25:31
because you guys got a little rowdy.

00:25:32
A lot of people were probably comply with that.

00:25:34
In agree with him, but Orange County is different and you've

00:25:38
started a little bit of a problem there for you and

00:25:41
Democrats. And this is not the hill that

00:25:44
you can die on because Californians pay a lot to live

00:25:48
close to the beach. There's a reason why the rest of

00:25:51
the country. Lives in California is 2 miles

00:25:54
wide and everybody lives on a beach or close to Hollywood is

00:25:58
because all the images you see are people at beaches or San

00:26:01
Diego, or surfing or Hollywood or stuff like that.

00:26:04
You don't see the big counties that are way up in what I like

00:26:07
to call the state of Jefferson. And in other news, just a side

00:26:12
note, there's a county up there, Modoc County, that basically

00:26:15
just gave the middle finger to Gavin Newsom and said, look,

00:26:17
we're opening. We don't care.

00:26:18
There's nobody up here. We've been practicing social

00:26:21
distancing because we're sparsely, densely hated or

00:26:25
sparsely populated county and there's no reason for us to keep

00:26:28
doing these social distancing. So they're basically thumbing

00:26:30
their nose, so you're starting to see a little bit more of this

00:26:33
specific county starting to fracture away from what the

00:26:38
governor and the state orders are saying.

00:26:40
So I don't think this is a really good idea from the die on

00:26:43
this hill and a lot of people may say, well, it's stupid.

00:26:46
What's the big deal? It's a beach.

00:26:47
It's been there forever. You're going to have the beach

00:26:49
when this is over and I think in California this is one of the

00:26:53
things that it's. Not only that it's emblematic of

00:26:56
the lockdown and what it is, and maybe the craziness of these

00:26:59
lockdowns if you go down to the beach.

00:27:01
People are walking around people and milling around.

00:27:04
When we went down and walked around back when they opened up

00:27:09
the beach. There was this Monday.

00:27:11
This past Monday people walked, people were playing sports,

00:27:15
people were throwing the Frisbee around.

00:27:47
huge beaches, especially places like Orange County, that you can

00:27:51
spread out and you can sit on a towel and be way far away from

00:27:55
anybody else. So why these are these things?

00:27:58
These are the issues that people are.

00:28:00
Looking at and they're saying this is ridiculous.

00:28:02
This is overburdensome. This really has nothing to do

00:28:05
with the virus anymore, it's just about penalizing us because

00:28:08
we don't comply with what you want us to do.

00:28:12
And this is a bad hill for him to die on.

00:28:16
It was smart of him to back off. Doesn't make him look like he's

00:28:20
a flip flopper. A little bit.

00:28:21
Sure. Do people say Oh well now he's

00:28:24
being a very smart and pragmatic politician.

00:28:27
It was bad in the 1st place. He could have just reprimanded

00:28:30
them and said look he could have handled this a little bit more

00:28:34
diplomatically. He could have called Orange

00:28:37
County supervisor like Michelle Steele and say look.

00:28:40
I'm not crazy about how many people are out on your beaches.

00:28:44
Can you make a point to let them know in a responsible way?

00:28:48
Just take it easy, you know social distance to whatever you

00:28:50
have to, but he didn't do that. Instead he just closed it down

00:28:54
like they were a little child and he was punishing them and

00:28:57
putting them in timeout. It's not the hill you want to

00:29:00
die on, especially not in California.

00:29:02
People are very, very attached to their beaches and their beach

00:29:06
life here in California. So not a good move on his part.

00:29:09
But the next clip I'm going to play you is a little bit more.

00:29:11
Terrifying and probably a little bit more scary if you look

00:29:15
between the lines, we're going to talk about that you mentioned

00:29:18
three months ago. The good news was this

00:29:22
incredible budget surplus in California budget surplus that

00:29:25
allowed a budget to have a lot of space for progressive issues.

00:29:29
Things like climate change things like addressing

00:29:31
homelessness. The reality is you are not going

00:29:35
to be able to hold that surplus, correct?

00:29:38
No, not all that surplus is gone.

00:29:40
And by the way previous year literally a year to go this

00:29:45
month. A year ago, this month we were

00:29:46
announcing how we're going to balance a $21.4 billion budget

00:29:50
surplus. I mean, it's just incredible how

00:29:53
quickly things move. The good news is we were prudent

00:29:56
in terms of our investments. One time surplus, one time

00:29:59
investments paid down debt started, pay down pension

00:30:02
obligations, and it's a way of saying this and forgive me

00:30:05
because I've lost half the people watching.

00:30:07
Don't want to talk about pensions?

00:30:08
It's not why they watch your show, but it's a way of saying

00:30:11
this when you hear some Republican leaders say we're not

00:30:14
going to bail out these states because of mismanagement.

00:30:18
With all due respect, California's been running

00:30:20
surpluses. We've been sending money to the

00:30:23
federal government over the last few decades to send to other

00:30:26
states to help them, and I'm really proud of this effort, and

00:30:29
I can only say this. We can't balance these budgets

00:30:32
and protect the most vulnerable without the federal government's

00:30:34
help, we're going to need a substantial amount of support.

00:30:39
It's directly because of this pandemic.

00:30:42
It's not because of mismanagement, it's because of

00:30:44
pandemic and that's why we're blessed to have speaker Nancy

00:30:47
Pelosi from the state of California and she's putting up

00:30:50
now close to $1 trillion. In separate bills to focus on

00:30:55
the needs of states, counties and cities.

00:30:57
And I'll tell you what Seth just flat out.

00:30:59
We sent her a letter three weeks ago, saying if you're not

00:31:02
talking close to a trillion, you're not having a serious

00:31:05
conversation about the magnitude of this crisis on budgets and

00:31:08
the impact on police and fire and health care workers and

00:31:11
teachers all across this country.

00:31:13
And I'm really proud of her and pleased that she's starting to

00:31:16
socialize numbers at that level because that's the level of this

00:31:20
crisis and the impact over the next three years.

00:31:24
That these budgets are going to feel there's a lot to unpack in

00:31:28
that clip. And if you listen closely, there

00:31:31
is a lot of stuff that is terrifying and a lot that you

00:31:36
can take away from just that little clip.

00:31:39
Now, obviously Seth Meyers and I just want to say this about Seth

00:31:41
Meyers and all these late night shows.

00:31:43
Is it that hard to go on Amazon and buy a $20 inline mic or a

00:31:50
wireless mic or even a snowball mic?

00:31:53
Or any sort of mic that doesn't make you sound like you're

00:31:56
recording? In a shoe box, I don't

00:31:59
understand all these late night hosts who get millions of

00:32:01
dollars in budgets all of a sudden they can't figure out how

00:32:04
to use any sort of mics or anything that Youtubers or

00:32:07
podcasters have been using forever.

00:32:09
But regardless of that. The issues there are so many

00:32:14
issues to unpack here. First off, let's talk about the

00:32:16
fact that the $24 billion surplus that Gavin Newsom likes

00:32:20
to brag about is now gone. And this is something I've said

00:32:24
before. It doesn't matter that there is

00:32:26
a $24 billion surplus if you're not spending it on anything, and

00:32:29
if you have an enormous amount of debt and deficit.

00:32:32
And we've said this before, and I'll beat the drum again and

00:32:36
again and again. California has a trillion

00:32:38
dollars in unfunded pension liabilities, 1 trillion.

00:32:42
Dollars, so even if Nancy Pelosi were to bail out her own nephew.

00:32:48
And run out to the Congress and say, OK, we need a trillion

00:32:51
dollars to bail out California. That would be the amount it

00:32:54
would have to all go to California to pay for their

00:32:58
pension liabilities. That's not to say that we won't

00:33:01
get in this problem again. Even if you were bailed out.

00:33:04
But the scarier thing is not that the $24 billion is gone.

00:33:08
I mean, that is terrifying that $24 billion.

00:33:10
Where did it go? Even the legislature is starting

00:33:13
to wonder where Gavin Newsom is spending some of this money.

00:33:16
He was recently caught. Give me a billion dollars to a

00:33:21
Chinese car manufacturer for making peepee face masks and a

00:33:27
lot of the legislature. Even people in his own party

00:33:29
were saying whoa, whoa, whoa wait a second.

00:33:30
You can't appropriate this many funds just for yourself and same

00:33:33
thing with putting aside $75 million in cash payments for

00:33:37
illegal immigrants struck down by the California Supreme Court,

00:33:40
saying you can't do that either. So where did all this money go?

00:33:44
Where did all this money go? Where did he spend it?

00:33:47
We won't know for a while, but the scarier thing is this.

00:33:51
Is that he pointed out that with that $24 billion he was in Seth

00:33:55
Meyers. Kind of alluded to this.

00:33:56
If you heard what you're saying about climate change and

00:34:00
different issues and green energy and all that issue all

00:34:03
the vogue things a celebrity like Seth Meyers would obviously

00:34:06
care about, because they've all been pushing it.

00:34:09
For years and years and years. He said, well, now you can't go

00:34:13
out and spend on these types of measures.

00:34:19
OK. So what when you have?

00:34:24
Personally, when you have a surplus of money, let's talk

00:34:27
about it on an individual matter.

00:34:30
OK, so California doesn't have its big savings account anymore

00:34:33
to go out and buy the things that it's been wanting, or that

00:34:37
it's on its big wish list. Right so.

00:34:42
Does that mean you get to go somewhere else and have someone

00:34:45
bail you out to get the things that are not necessary?

00:34:51
All on your wish list? No.

00:34:53
If you're an individual like you are now here in the coronavirus

00:34:57
and you are shut down and you're quarantined and you've had to

00:35:01
use your entire savings to just put food on the table, or at

00:35:05
least keep a roof over your head.

00:35:07
Or maybe at least keep your business open.

00:35:10
Maybe you're paying employees with your savings account, who

00:35:13
knows? So this big surplus you may have

00:35:15
amassed over the past couple of years when the economy was

00:35:17
really good is now gone, but you don't get to go.

00:35:21
To the government and say, well, I spent all my savings and now I

00:35:24
don't get to do the things like I wanted to go to Disneyland or

00:35:27
I want to take a trip to Europe or I wanted to add a new

00:35:30
addition on my house or put in a pool or buy a new car or et

00:35:35
cetera, et cetera. You don't get to get your wish

00:35:38
list things because your savings ran out.

00:35:40
That's what you're saving. Savings are gone.

00:35:42
I'm sorry that's what it's for. It's for a rainy day so you

00:35:47
don't get to bail out so that California could go ahead and

00:35:51
push forward. With these progressive.

00:35:55
Initiatives. Just because now you're savings

00:35:58
is gone. No, that's you're not getting

00:36:00
bailed out. Every state got hit.

00:36:03
Every state had to figure out what to do in this crisis.

00:36:09
And every state is going to have to look at well, what's crucial

00:36:12
now. How do we get back to normal?

00:36:14
How do we kind of get our budget back under order?

00:36:16
That's what every state is going to have to do.

00:36:20
Now, if there's an issue, if there is an emergency, and I'm

00:36:23
not even a big fan of this. I'm sort of along with Mitch

00:36:27
McConnell that if you hit bankruptcy and you can't balance

00:36:30
your budgets now, the fact is California lost all its surplus.

00:36:33
It's going to have lost revenue tax revenue because it lost 1/4

00:36:36
of the year to coronavirus. And the longer Gavin Newsom

00:36:39
keeps this shut down. He's going to lose even more tax

00:36:42
revenue. He's not going to have a problem

00:36:46
where his books are not going to be well balanced.

00:36:50
You're going to have enormous amounts of debt.

00:36:52
Enormous amounts of deficit not being able to.

00:36:56
Pay any of that stuff. Here's an idea for Gavin Newsom.

00:37:02
Like that individual who stuck at home and spent his entire

00:37:06
savings to keep a roof over his head and to feed his family.

00:37:10
Or to keep the lights on, or to pay employees.

00:37:13
You know that rainy day in case of emergency savings fund, he

00:37:16
won't get to use it for the fun things he's been wishing for.

00:37:20
Maybe Gavin Newsom needs to go back to the legislature and say,

00:37:23
OK, we need to revise our budget to figure out how we're going to

00:37:27
work within this new paradigm. What are things that are

00:37:31
essential and nonessential? Where can we cut back what's way

00:37:34
stuff like that? But that's not what a

00:37:36
progressive like Gavin Newsom sees.

00:37:39
See, he has a clear vision of what he wants to do, what he

00:37:43
wants to enact. He knows.

00:37:46
And he said this in a previous interview which I talked about

00:37:50
that he wants to, or he sees the opportunity to push for a

00:37:54
progressive form of capitalism coming out of this.

00:37:59
So just because the. State might be flat broke at

00:38:03
this point. It doesn't mean he's not going

00:38:05
to run to anti Nancy and have her bail him out and give him

00:38:09
billions of dollars to replenish his surplus.

00:38:13
So now he can go out and get his progressive wish list.

00:38:17
And if this should infuriate the individual, because if you're no

00:38:22
one's been coming to help a lot of individuals here in

00:38:25
California, millions of people are unemployed.

00:38:27
California businesses are drawing up.

00:38:29
I haven't seen anyone who's really gotten too much help from

00:38:32
the state in the sense of I don't know any state grants or

00:38:35
stuff like that. I don't even really know anybody

00:38:37
who's talked about it. It's always been coming from the

00:38:39
federal government with the PPP loans and the economic injury

00:38:42
disaster alone. Outside of that, I haven't heard

00:38:46
California rushing to send. Millions of dollars to help its

00:38:50
small businesses. Have you?

00:38:51
Has anyone heard of California helping the small business owner

00:38:55
has any unemployment checks that were supposed to go out as fast

00:38:59
as possible? Are still three weeks behind

00:39:02
four weeks behind? They still haven't gotten their

00:39:04
first paycheck. It's now we've now gone so far

00:39:07
into the crisis. That by the time they start

00:39:10
getting their unemployment we should be reopening.

00:39:13
We're actually on the other side of this now that we should be

00:39:16
reopening. And people should be going back

00:39:19
to work and the unemployment won't be worth anything.

00:39:23
But those people still had to scrape by and get through an

00:39:26
entire six weeks 8 weeks. Without any help from the

00:39:30
government, so California basically did zilch to help its

00:39:34
citizens to help its small businesses to bail them out.

00:39:39
And a lot of these individuals and small businesses should be

00:39:42
upset that they had to figure out and make sacrifices and

00:39:45
figure out what they're going to do with their businesses moving

00:39:48
forward. Their business budgets are going

00:39:50
to be different. Their business budgets aren't

00:39:52
going to be the same. Maybe they were on track to

00:39:56
expand. Maybe they were on track to add

00:39:58
more space or buy a new piece of property.

00:40:00
Maybe they are on track to add a couple dozen new employees.

00:40:04
Now they can't now that wish list is gone because they may

00:40:07
have had to use all of their saved up money and all their

00:40:10
capital just to keep the doors open.

00:40:12
But Gavin Newsom doesn't see things that way for his

00:40:15
government. He sees things as I wanted these

00:40:19
things. I want climate change

00:40:22
initiatives. I want progressive initiatives

00:40:24
here in California to help the most vulnerable.

00:40:28
Then you could fill in the blanks of whoever you want him

00:40:30
to be. The bulk most vulnerable.

00:43:24
need to. I need help because of the

00:43:26
coronavirus, no, no, you had that liability long before

00:43:31
coronavirus ever even showed up on our shores.

00:43:35
Same thing with New York and New York City.

00:43:37
All these States and cities who are high taxes who spend their

00:43:40
money Willy nilly who have no issue with waste or fraud or

00:43:44
abuse when it comes to taxpayer money.

00:43:47
All of a sudden are going to be running to the federal

00:43:48
government with their hands out. In California, will probably be

00:43:52
one of the first in line to say, oh look, we bail out so many

00:43:55
people because we're the California word.

00:43:58
This booming economy and blah blah blah blah.

00:44:02
Sure there is an argument that we do give a lot of federal aid

00:44:05
back or federal money back. That goes to the government.

00:44:10
But that's because you like to brag where, like the 5th largest

00:44:12
economy in the world or something like that.

00:44:15
I don't know what constantly shifts up and down.

00:44:17
It's always 5th or 7th or whatever, however, largest

00:44:20
conomy. You want to brag about being a

00:44:25
big economy. OK, so you do actually give more

00:44:29
in taxes because you make more. You raise more revenue for the

00:44:32
entire country. That's a good thing, because if

00:44:35
you're a successful economic person usually.

00:44:37
What happens when you're successful economically in this

00:44:40
country you end up do spending more money in taxes because

00:44:43
that's how our system as a progressive tax system is made.

00:44:46
But that's besides the point. I guess California doesn't like

00:44:50
the progressive tax code when it doesn't apply to them, or when

00:44:55
it does apply to them. So it's terrifying to hear that

00:45:00
he thinks that he's entitled to this bailout money.

00:45:04
That he thinks Nancy Pelosi is going to ramrod this trillion

00:45:07
dollar bill through to help bail out the states.

00:45:11
I don't think that's how this works.

00:45:15
You had a $24 billion rainy day fund because it was supposed to

00:45:22
be used in case of emergencies like this.

00:45:25
This is the ultimate rainy day right now.

00:45:28
And you built it up and good for you.

00:45:31
You were able to build up this $24 billion surplus.

00:45:36
And now it's gone, it's sad. But why not look into how to

00:45:42
rebuild that through better budgetary management rather?

00:45:48
Than just asking Nancy Pelosi for a huge bailout.

00:45:54
So there are a couple articles I was going to talk about and then

00:45:58
I found these clips and I wanted to talk about a little bit more.

00:46:01
I'm still going to post them up in the show notes.

00:46:04
I want to get too far into it because if I get into it another

00:46:06
topic this is going to start really going over an hour and

00:46:09
really trying to keep these shows under an hour under 5040

00:46:12
minutes. So with that I'm going to end

00:46:17
this show today. Like I always say, if you want

00:46:21
to call into the show, you want to leave a voice message for the

00:46:25
show which will be played like Jim's voice message.

00:46:27
Last week you can go to anchor dot FM California underground

00:46:32
and leave a voice message. Play it on the show.

00:46:34
Answer your question in the show if you just want to email me a

00:46:38
question that wants to be read on the show.

00:46:40
You can also do that as well. Underground@protonmail.com

00:46:45
follow us on social media. The most active place is

00:46:48
Instagram. That's right.

00:46:49
Do a lot of stuff and post a lot of stuff.

00:46:51
And that's also very simple California underground, so make

00:46:55
sure to like this podcast. Subscribe, leave a review that

00:47:00
helps out. Share it with other people who

00:47:02
are interested in this kind of news and reflection on

00:47:06
California politics. Because there is a lot going on

00:47:08
in California, and obviously you're not going to get it from

00:47:11
the national news and you need someone who is going to break it

00:47:14
down. Specifically, because especially

00:47:16
now. With the lockdowns going on, I

00:47:19
mean there's always a lot of political news going on.

00:47:21
In California is an enormous state, and there's a lot of

00:47:26
issues, a lot of politics going on here, and that's what I try

00:47:29
and break down, but I've set this before.

00:47:31
I don't want this to just be me and my soapbox.

00:47:34
I want this to be a show where people can interact, and the

00:47:39
more people interact it can be used as a launching pad as a

00:47:43
bullhorn to other people who are interested in talking about this

00:47:46
type of stuff. That's what this podcast is for.

00:47:49
This podcast is created as a vehicle for people who are like

00:47:55
the intro says, whether you're a conservative libertarian or

00:48:00
you're a moderate Democrat, or you're just someone who thinks

00:48:03
things are getting a little out of hand here in California.

00:48:05
It doesn't really matter. You just want to get back to a

00:48:09
normal, responsible California that's not off the rails with

00:48:13
overspending and high taxes, and too many regulations.

00:48:17
That's what the point of this show is.

00:48:19
So the more people who share it, and the more people who

00:48:22
interact, I can guarantee this show will get just.

00:48:26
It'll be even better if more people really start to interact

00:48:31
sending questions, send in voice messages, share it with people

00:48:35
who think like this or who think would really benefit from a show

00:48:39
like this, or want to talk about stuff like this.

00:48:43
And with that I'm going to end. Take care.

00:48:46
There's little protests, I think today and tomorrow check fully

00:48:51
open sea on Instagram. They have all the information.

00:48:56
If you're one of the lucky counties that gets to go out to

00:48:58
the beach, enjoy the beach this weekend.

00:49:00
Enjoy some sunshine that kills coronavirus and I'll see you

00:49:04
again next week. See on the next one.
